Mets 0, Padres 7: Musgrove Continues Domination
Musgrove Extends Scoreless Streak
San Diego, California
On Friday, August 23, 2024, the San Diego Padres defeated the New York Mets 7-0 at Petco Park. Padres starting pitcher Joe Musgrove allowed just one hit in seven scoreless innings, extending his scoreless streak against the Mets to 20 innings, including the postseason.
Musgrove, who was making his second start since returning from the injured list, was in complete control throughout his outing. He struck out eight batters and walked none, while inducing 12 groundball outs.
The Padres offense provided Musgrove with plenty of support, scoring seven runs on nine hits. Manny Machado led the way with a 2-for-4 performance, including a solo home run in the third inning.
Musgrove's Dominance
Musgrove's performance against the Mets was the latest in a string of strong outings for the right-hander. In his last five starts, Musgrove has allowed just two earned runs in 33 innings, with 32 strikeouts and six walks.
Musgrove's resurgence has been a major boost for the Padres, who have won seven of his last nine starts. The Padres are now 4.5 games back of the Milwaukee Brewers for the final NL Wild Card spot.
Musgrove's Defense
In addition to his strong pitching, Musgrove also made a key defensive play in the fourth inning. With runners on first and second and one out, Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor hit a groundball to Musgrove's left. Musgrove fielded the ball cleanly and threw a strike to first baseman Eric Hosmer, who stretched to make the catch.
Musgrove's defensive play helped to keep the Mets off the scoreboard and preserve his shutout.
The Padres will face the Mets again on Saturday in the second game of their three-game series.
